Catch-up work is well covered
13 of the 29 firms, or 45%, say they take on catch-up or cleanup work, so if you're months behind you have real choice. Ask how that work is scoped and priced separately from the monthly fee.
Reporting and process
12 of 29 state how often they send reports, and 7 of 29 describe onboarding. The rest may do both well. They just don't say so, which leaves you to ask.
Software and working remotely
QuickBooks leads: 52% name it, 21% name QuickBooks Online and 14% still name QuickBooks Desktop. Xero shows up at 10%. 31% of firms say they work with clients remotely, so a Houston firm doesn't have to be across town to be an option.
Texas CPA licenses
We can't yet confirm Texas CPA licenses, because the state board's register doesn't allow automated lookups. Every firm here shows "Not verified" for credentials, including firms with CPA in their name. Look the license up on the board's own search before you rely on it. Business registrations were checked against Texas Comptroller data.

What should I expect to pay when nobody publishes a price?
We don't collect fees from firms, so we can't give a Houston figure. Our pricing guide explains how monthly, catch-up and hourly work are usually priced, and what to get in writing before you start.
Several firms here have CPA in their name. Are they licensed?
They may well be, but we couldn't confirm it. The Texas board blocks automated searches of its register, so every Texas credential reads Not verified until someone checks it by hand on the board's free license search.
Can a firm pay for a higher position?
No. Positions follow scores, and scores follow evidence with fixed weights. Pleiades Consultancy, which runs the index, gives its own clients a separate Featured slot that's labelled and sits outside the ranking. The disclosures page has the terms.
