Both use the historic county names, which still describe where people live even though the counties stopped being governments in 1960. Each page lists the towns it covers. Pick the county you're in, or the one you're willing to drive to.
Connecticut publishes its professional licenses as open data, CPA firm permits included, with status and expiry dates. So every Connecticut firm in the index was checked against it, not just the ones that call themselves CPAs. When a permit is active, the profile shows the permit number and when it expires. When no permit turns up, the profile names what we searched, because most bookkeeping firms aren't CPA firms and don't need to be.
Business registrations and formation dates come from the Secretary of the State's business registry, which the state also publishes as open data.
Fairfield County firms write more down: more of them describe onboarding and catch-up work, and a couple more publish prices. Hartford County firms are just as easy to verify, but their sites say less, so their scores run lower. Both pages list local firms first and firms that work remotely separately.
